TED LARSEN

For some years, Ted Larsen has been creating ‘paintings’ using the most unorthodox of materials – scavanged steel from wrecked automobiles, road signs and building demolition sites -- and incorporating them into delicately hued, meticulously crafted compositions that speak of minimalist landscapes.

In his new series, “Constructed Objects,” at Parks Gallery in Taos, NM, Larsen has expanded the work into sculptural forms of unusual beauty and visual power. “I’m distilling the process, simplifying the palette,” Larsen says, “but striving for more potency. I want to create relatively small objects that have a monumental quality.”

While the work has an obvious kinship with the spare forms of minimalism, Donald Judd’s, for example, Larsen’s own hand is everywhere present in his sculpture. “I’m an inveterate dumpster diver,” he says. “It’s an important part of the process that I find all the materials and then shape the pieces myself with whatever tools are necessary, from saws and tin snips to sledge hammers,” he says.

The series is being displayed on Parks Gallery’s 200-year-old adobe walls. Larsen concludes: “I love the contrast between the reductive quality of the art, the newness of the ideas and the forms, with the authenticity of an old adobe, its warmth and curves.”

BIOGRAPHY

What a joy it is to be an artist, with the freedom to completely explore the world and the world of the aesthetic. But, oh, what a responsibility to be an artist - to be charged with the world of the aesthetic.

The churning world has caused me to completely re-evaluate my work and its purpose for me and the world at large. This has largely been an existential question. Through this process I have come away driven to find the essence of my aesthetic. And I have found that first constructing my images, next deconstructing my images, and then finally reconstructing my images, to be the most authentic representation of my internal struggle.

Hence, in this new body of work, I am looking toward the meaning of free association, random arrangements, color relationships, plus the exploration of something old, uniquely tribal, and perhaps timeless. I am using a variety of materials to explore and expound on these ideas. Enamel over steel constructions and random arrangements of constructed/deconstructed/reconstructed images in vinyl, oils, encaustics, paper, and steel or aluminum are my primary materials. With these materials I am trying to create a slightly familiar image, yet removed from its source. These are not images we know directly, but our subconscious is aware of them somehow. I am exploring themes and motifs which are very personal to me. Essentially these are landscapes, but shown in a new way. I invite the viewer to explore, question the materials at hand and draw their own conclusions.
